I attended the protest in Olympia this past Sunday, and was horrified to hear your speech on the capitol steps. To hear you, an elected government official and representative of the people of the state of Washington utter the words, “It is time to chase out of the house of God all the unbelievers and evildoers” was shocking.

Do you actually think that the capitol is a “house of God”? It is, in fact, the seat of the elected civil government of the state. The State Legislature serves all citizens, not just those who believe in your particular brand of deity. To claim that you have the right or the basis for driving anyone out of State government based on your deity is immoral and unconstitutional.

I am a citizen, a taxpayer, and an Atheist. I am not “an evildoer.” I am a community organizer — the Atheist group that I run is dedicated to charity.

Shame on you. You are inciting hatred and discrimination, and you are promoting zealotry. You are violating the principles of the separation of church and state. I have no confidence in your ability as a leader or rational thinker after the display on Sunday.

There should be NO statements of religious or non-religious belief in the Capitol. This is not a popularity contest. Just because your religion encompasses a majority does not give you the privilege of being the only one represented on public property.

You must issue an apology to your constituents and to the State of Washington for your bigoted statements. Sadly, I don’t expect an apology. It would, after all, be the Christian thing to do.
